“This Savage Song” by V.E. Schwab is a dystopian fantasy book set in a world run by two factions who each control different species of monsters. The story focuses on their children, August and Kate, and their desires to prove themselves to their fathers. While tasked to kidnap Kate, August befriends her and has to keep his nature as a monster a secret. Schwab did an amazing job with the monsters, three different species with their different powers that reach far beyond the typical scary monsters that hide in the dark. The post apocalyptic setting is also very well executed and beautifully used to explore all that the monsters are good at. The characters themselves are compelling in the way that Kate wants to be a monster to impress her dad and August wants nothing more than to be a normal human, and their relationship becomes one of the best parts of the book.
