Crash Landing on You

Crash Landing on You (2019) is a South Korean television series about Yoon Se-ri, a wealthy South Korean businesswoman who gets into a paragliding accident and lands in North Korean territory, where she is discovered by Ri Jeong-hyeok, a North Korean soldier who agrees to hide her until he can help her get back home. Despite their cultural differences and the danger that faces them both if Se-ri should be discovered by North Korean authorities, the two begin to fall in love.

This series, which mixes romance with comedy, drama and suspense, features endearing supporting characters and a central couple that’s easy to root for. It has been praised for its complex, three-dimensional depiction of North Korea, something which is not typically seen in South Korean (or Western) media. Though it doesn’t present a flattering picture of North Korea as a whole, it shows many individual North Koreans as relatable and even sympathetic. It probably helps that one of the writers for the series is a North Korean defector.

The show is available to stream (with English subtitles) on Netflix, which you can access using one of WPL’s Rokus.
