In The Colour of Magic, part 1 of the Discworld Series, Terry Pratchett introduces readers to a flat earth-like planet held up on the back of four elephants balancing on the back of a giant turtle meandering through space. The book is a humorous fantasy spoof on the Lord of the Rings with a cowardly wizard named Rincewind and an innocent but accident prone hobbit like character, Twoflower. The main characters leave a trail of disasters in their wake trying to escape capture from wizards and other nefarious characters. A danger to themselves and those around them, I found myself rooting for the hapless duo right up to the end of the book.
Using humor as well as puns to spare, Pratchett allows the reader to become immersed in this fantasy world. Continuing in the series (it’s that good!), I hope to review the best of the 41 books that comprise the Discworld series.
