Public libraries are often referred to as community living rooms. They are a place where community members can come together, interact, and access a variety of resources and information. This month, we encourage you to join the fabric of our community and sign-up for a Wheaton Public Library card. With your card you can: 

• Reserve study rooms up to a week in advance 

The end of summer is approaching, which means the 2022-2023 school year is just around the corner! See below for ways students can volunteer this fall, get assistance with their homework, and receive personalized book recommendations.

Volunteer Opportunities

Looking for ways to volunteer during the school year? Teens in grades 6-12 can earn service hours with the library! Fill out our Volunteer Interest Form and we’ll be in touch to work out a schedule.

Wheaton Public Library’s 2022 Summer Reading Challenge: Read Beyond the Beaten Path has now started! The challenge is open to all ages: Children (birth to 5th grade), Teens (6th to 12th grade) and Adults (18 years and older), and will run from Wednesday, June 1 – Sunday, July 31. All are welcome to participate, no library card required.

This March, WPL will start to offer some programs in a hybrid format with an in-person presenter and both in-person and virtual participants via Zoom. The library is very excited to have our patrons engage with programs again in-person!

What is hybrid programming?

Hybrid programming is where a program has an in-person presenter and audience, as well as a virtual audience. During the in-person program, library staff will stream the presentation via Zoom so audience members who would prefer to watch from home can do so.

The library recently added new content to our Rokus! Watch shows and movies on popular platforms like the Amazon Prime Channel, Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Apple TV+. You’ll also be able to access over 1,000 movies through our Roku’s Vudu Channel. Please note a TV with HDMI and wireless internet at home are required to use the Roku.

Yep, you read that right! Watch shows like Bridgerton, Ted Lasso, and more with our newly refreshed Rokus.  

WPL’s 2021 Annual Report is now live on our website! Take a look back at some of the highlights from 2021, including the elimination of daily fines, the creation of our new website, and much more. This report also contains data from programs, circulation, and a variety of other areas. There is a lot to celebrate from this past year, and we are looking forward to accomplishing even more in 2022.

Participate in Money Smart Week (April 9 -16) with the Wheaton Public Library! Organized by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Money Smart Week is national campaign focused on financial literacy. During this week the library will provide programs, and highlight resources to help patrons better understand personal finance topics.

National Library Week (April 3 – 9) is a yearly celebration of libraries, the many services they offer, and their workers. This year’s theme is “Connect with Your Library,” which highlights libraries as a place to get connected to technology through broadband, computers, and other resources. Beyond technology, libraries offer many ways to connect through community, classes, clubs, books, and more. See below for some ways you can celebrate National Library Week with WPL, and for a list of tech resources and services we offer. 

Students in grades 6 – 12 can earn service hours at the library by joining our Teen Library Council! Our Teen Library Council meets monthly to discuss library and community projects, help plan programs, recommend books, and much more.

The library recently added AtoZ Maps to our database collection! AtoZ Maps is a great tool, whether you need it for a school project, or you're curious about the world now or in the past. Browse historical or current maps, flags of the world, and even try a few geography games.

New pages with links to reading recommendations have been added and we've broadened our Book Match service to all ages, where a librarian selects titles based on your preferences.  As you look around you will see links to databases, websites, community resources and videos by topic.

We’ve added new resources to help with your genealogy and family history search. Find stories, photos, and personal documents of those who served with Fold3, and access over 4,000 newspapers dating from the early 1700s to the 2000s with Newspapers.com
