The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson

If you love Carrie by Stephen King, you should read this book! I enjoyed this book a lot. The book is laid out like a mystery podcast with pieces of the story. I spend most of the book rooting for Madison and wishing that she didn’t meet the same fate as Carrie. In this retelling of Carrie, Madison isn’t raised by her mother, instead she is raised by her religious father who faults her for being biracial. This retelling is told in modern day, in a Southern small town in which proms are still segregated due to prejudice.  Madison is forced to hide the fact that she is biracial by her father, until one fateful day her hair reveals the truth.

Triggers: child abuse, and racism
