This novel may be short but it packs a punch. Set in rural Ireland in the 80s, Small Things Like These (2021) is an inspirational read about the struggles of the poor and working-class Irish. Author Claire Keegan sheds light on the shockingly relatively recent history of the Magdalene Laundries and their terrible treatment of unwed mothers, while her protagonist, Bill, is dealing with an existential crisis and wondering what the point of life is without compassion for and helping others.
A beautifully written, touching story, perfect for the holiday season.
