Raised by a Serial Killer by April Balascio

Raised by a Serial Killer (2024) by April Balascio is a memoir by the daughter of Edward Wayne Edwards, whose crimes went unpunished for decades until April, who long suspected that her father was a murderer, called a cold case line in 2009, and helped finally bring her father to justice. Many of these events were covered in the 2019 podcast, The Clearing, but in her memoir, April writes in depth about her harrowing childhood, in which she and her four siblings were victims of an extremely abusive father and a mother powerless to stop the abuse. Edwards constantly moved his family, making it difficult for any friends, neighbors, or teachers to really make any lasting impact in improving the children’s lives. The descriptions of the abuse, cruelty and neglect April and her siblings faced makes for very difficult reading, but I found April’s courage in making something of her life and ultimately helping to bring her father to justice, to be inspiring and I hope that this memoir was cathartic for April to write.
