The Rachel Incident by Caroline O'Donoghue

I absolutely loved The Rachel Incident (2023) by Caroline O'Donoghue, set in Ireland during the aftermath of the global economic crisis of 2008. As an elder Millennial, I really identified with the main character Rachel, and her struggles as a college student during that economically depressing time. Rachel works with her best friend and housemate James at a not-exactly-thriving bookstore. Rachel and James host a book signing for Rachel's professor and crush, Dr. Byrne, at the bookstore and nothing turns out like any of them expect, setting events in motion that will change all of their lives, and eventually lead to the "Rachel incident." The sharp writing and unexpected plot elements make this coming-of-age story a true delight to read.
