I love dogs and have always taken an interest in the British royal family, so when I saw The Queen’s Faithful Companion: A Novel of Queen Elizabeth II and Her Beloved Corgi, Susan (2024) on the new books shelf, I knew I needed to read it right away! The story is told from three perspectives: Princess and soon-to-be Queen Elizabeth, Susan the Corgi, and Hanna Penwyck, a fictionalized keeper of the royal dogs. If you’ve watched The Crown like I have, most of Elizabeth’s chapters will be very familiar territory, so I especially enjoyed Susan’s perspective as a dog in the royal household, and Hanna’s experiences as the keeper of the royal dogs. Susan, of course, doesn’t really care that her beloved Elizabeth is the Queen of England, she just wants to spend as much time with her as possible and provide amusement and comfort the way only a dog can. Fair warning to all dog lovers: get your tissues ready for the ending of the book!
