(Me) Moth by Amber McBride

5 out of 5 Stars

Me (Moth) by Amber McBride is a novel in verse about Moth, who is trying to live smaller and less after losing her family in a car accident. Now living with her aunt she feels alone and invisible – until she meets Sani. Sani is Navajo and dealing with his own traumatic past, part of which he confides in Moth and part, which remains shrouded in secret. Together they decide to road tip to New Mexico for the summer, sharing stories, traumatic family and cultural histories, and their own secrets. But some secrets Moth has even kept from herself.

Amber McBride has written a story that is beautiful and sad. Full of ghosts that are sometimes angry (with good reason), but always real rather than scary. It contains trauma and love and heartbreak and learning to continue on. Me (Moth) is full of magic that is palpably real.
