The Favorites by Layne Fargo

The Favorites (2025) by Layne Fargo is a loose reimagining of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, set in the world of competitive ice dancing. Orphans and self-described “Midwestern trash,” Katarina Shaw and Heath Rocha meet as children at their local skating rink, where they form an instant connection and become a powerful duo in the ice dancing world. “Shaw and Rocha” soon become a public sensation with their rebellious skating style and tumultuous relationship off the ice. Interspersed within the story are clips from the script of a fictional Netflix-style documentary called The Favorites: The Shaw & Rocha Story, in which friends, judges, and rivals of the pair fill in the story leading up to their dramatic final skate at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. The audio version with a full cast was fun to listen to, especially skater-turned-blogger Ellis Dean (voiced by retired skater Johnny Weir) and strait-laced judge Jane Currer. If you enjoy dishy stories with plenty of drama and gossip, you will love every moment of this book!
