The Cousins by Karen McManus

The Cousins by Karen McManus

After receiving an invitation to spend the summer with their estranged grandmother, the Story cousins arrive at her house only to discover that she is not there, and the longer they stay on the island, the more they realize their mysterious family history has some deadly secrets.

This was my first McManus novel, and I had high hopes for it. Unfortunately, I felt really let down when there wasn’t a major murder-mystery for the reader to solve; it did, however, carry the question ‘Why are these characters here?’ very well. Never giving out the final answers too soon, I was continuously asking myself, ‘What the heck is going on?’.

Though McManus went a less murdery route, I do admit that there was a good amount of confusion and misdirection. As the cousins are trying to figure out ‘why they were invited to the island’, they begin learning about the reasons as to why their parents were disowned from their grandmother, her riches, and who she is...or isn’t.

If you like McManus' works, this one may be a tad different than her usual works, however it's not a bad shake-up. Feel free to pick this up if you enjoy going through the rabbit hole and plummeting into confusion where answers are barely given out without more questions arising in response.
