Case Histories by Kate Atkinson

Although Case Histories is technically fiction, it is also a mystery. Or actually, mysteries. But what makes this book really stand out are the characters. The reader gets to know them, their thoughts, their flaws (and strengths), what motivates them, and what they feel. They are multilayered and complex, and most importantly for the reader, fascinating.
It is set in Cambridge England, the main character being Jackson Brodie, a private detective, who we find out is a “case study” of his own. He is engaging, introspective and kindhearted, although dealing with issues of his past (and present). The novel was written and takes place in 2004, and revolves around three unsolved “case studies” that took place in 1970, 1979, and 1994. This disappearance of a young girl, the murder of a newlywed husband and the apparent random killing of a lawyer’s daughter are seemingly unrelated, but are woven together skillfully by the author. The reader will care about what happens to these characters, and find that as in life, even after grief and sorrow, there is joy and redemption.

I strongly recommend this book by Kate Atkinson. It is a compelling combination of well crafted mystery and psychological character studies with a riveting plot and even a touch of humor.
