Tween Services Associate II Part-Time

The Wheaton Public Library is seeking applicants for the position of a part-time Tween Associate II to work in the Youth Services Department, focusing on service to children in grades 3-5 and their families.  This staff member assists the Youth Services Department Head with the promotion, process and management of the Youth Service’s Department.  This includes basic reader’s advisory and reference questions, general directional questions and assistance in youth programs.

Salary: $18.28/hour, includes PTO, vacation and IMRF pension

Hours: 25 hours/week including afternoons, evenings, weekends and special events as needed. Although a weekly schedule is established, the needs of the Library may require schedule changes and flexibility.

Position Details:

  • Provide excellent reader’s advisory and reference service—assist patrons in selecting materials appropriate for their stated needs.
  • Conducts basic computer instruction to children and families.
  • Assists in the training of new Youth Services staff members.
  • Assists in developing and producing programs, displays, booklists, and online resources that promote the collections and services for children grades 3-6.
  • Assist in all programs, in-house and outside Library, this includes school services and other special needs programs and events.
  • Assists in maintaining the accurate organization of all tween materials.
  • Maintains a high level of knowledge of popular tween and parenting materials and the reading tastes of the community.
  • Discusses literature with confidence and enthusiasm and does not judge the reading tastes of others.

Education Requirements:

  • Education, training, and/or relevant experience equivalent to the completion of a bachelor’s degree.
  • LTA desired.
  • Experience in public libraries and/or customer service.
  • Familiarity with a variety of children’s materials.

Physical & Mental Requirements:

  • Sitting, walking, some standing, stooping, bending, lifting up to 25 lbs., and pushing carts weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Crouching, kneeling, climbing onto or sitting on low stools to retrieve materials from high or low shelves.
  • Looking at a computer screen and retrieving and processing information for long periods of time.
  • Requires repetitive hand and shoulder movement.
  • Good vision and hearing.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
