The History of Writing and the Alphabet

For over 5,000 years, people have made use of writing to make language visible and permanent, from cuneiform and Egyptian hieroglyphics to today’s alphabet. PhD student Andrew Burlingame will discuss how these writing systems emerged, why their earliest inventors used them, and how they have changed.
