Book Sale Dates | Book Sale Rules

Where can you buy hardcover and paperback books, DVDs, VHS tapes, CDs, LPs, cassettes, computer games, and audiobooks at incredible bargain prices? At the Friends Book Sale! This mega sale features more than 30,000 books that fill the Lower Level Meeting Room, lobby, and Children’s hallway. Every year buyers find like-new fiction and nonfiction bestsellers, tempting cook books, classics from the past, intriguing titles you never knew existed, and just plain fun reads. Children’s books are included too. Plus, it’s much more than just a book sale. You can flip through hundreds of collectible LPs and if you still have a working VCR, this is the place to find a year’s worth of movies at $1 each. Music CDs are always popular sellers and the DVDs go quickly.

No electronic devices of any kind are allowed in the sale. That includes laptops, cell phones, scanners, etc. Because of the tight aisles, we cannot allow strollers or book carts in the sale. See the complete list of rules, or pick up a copy at the Reference Desk.

The Book Sale is the biggest fundraiser of the year for our Friends group. Members of the Friends sort the donations, organize shelves, and ring up sales. All money raised at this sale benefits the library. Funds raised by the Friends pay for the Summer and Sunday Sampler concerts, the summer reading programs, and other special events. The fireplace in the Adult Quiet Reading Room and the beautiful Story House Marsh mural were both funded by the Friends. If you’d like to help by working on the sale, join the Friends! Membership applications are available at the Checkout Desk or online. Members of the Friends are invited to attend the Preview Sale on Thursday evening, September 23.

Bag Up Your Books - Donate to the Book Sale!
The Friends of the Wheaton Public Library are accepting donations of used and new books, DVDs, videos, audio books, CDs, LPs, and cassettes for their annual book sale. All donations should be in a box or bag and may be dropped off at the adult check-out desk of the library. If you can't bring your items in, call Carolyn at 630-868-7592 to arrange a pick-up. Donations are being accepted from now through September 21.

In addition to the usual books and audiovisual items, this year the group is also collecting framed and unframed art! So pull out those old pictures stashed under beds and in the back of the closet. The art will be featured at the November Collectibles and Gift Book Sale.

About the Friends
Wheaton’s Friends of the Library group turned six years old in spring '09. Anyone can become a member by filling out the application and paying the annual dues, which range from $5 for Seniors and Students to $50 for Best Friends. The dues, along with all the money raised throughout the year, go directly to benefit the library. Current Friends members are asked to renew their memberships each May. A renewal letter is sent in April.

Our main fundraising event is the September Book Sale and many people join just to help with this huge undertaking. Over the past six years, the Friends have contributed over $60,000 to the Wheaton Public Library. Those funds were used for the library’s fireplace, the very popular Sunday Sampler concerts, Children’s and Adult Department programs, Summer Reading incentives, and a mural for the Children’s Department Story House, which was officially opened by the Mayor and Friends Board members on March 20, 2009.

Besides working on our fundraising events, volunteer opportunities include serving on the Friends Board or helping maintain Adams Park. This project, under the direction of Friends Board member Joan Reuss, started last spring and proved to be very rewarding. Those volunteering are responsible for weeding one quadrant of the park. Members who would like to participate in the project are asked to leave your name at the Reference Desk.
